A.3.4 - Service Learning Project

Spring 2011

Fall 2010: Under the Literacy Umbrella: Thursday, 14 October 2010 - 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Be on time!

Where: Rivera Elementary School

Address: 701 Newton Street

Denton, TX 76205-6234

940-369-3800

Bring: Umbrella and a selection of 4 or 5 picturebooks to read to children between the ages of 4 and 12. Come prepared to have fun co-facilitating other activities lead by other adults. If you read in Spanish, please bring Spanish language or bilingual books, too!

Recommended Books

Individual students who cannot attend the whole class project will complete this assignment on their own.

From the syllabus:

“Students will share a book in the community. The goal of this assignment is to practice read-aloud techniques with real audiences. The professor will arrange a time for the class to share books with children in a school setting. Students who are unable to attend the group event will make arrangements to conduct the assignment on their own and document their experience with a photograph.”

Through your booktalks, read-alouds, and literature circle discussion leadership you will have gained practice sharing books with your peers in the university classroom. This project gives you the opportunity to take your university classroom learning out into the field and share with a small group of children.

You may complete this project any time before the due date.

If you participate in this assignment with the entire class, please prepare three picture books for sharing with K-5 children. If you are conducting this assignment on your own, you will select up to three books targeted for your audience. You must conduct this learning experience in a school setting.

You must secure the proper permissions to conduct this project independently from the class.
